The Target Gender Equality initiative is run in collaboration with Global Compact Local Networks, with most activities led at the local level. Over the course of 9 months, companies engage in facilitated performance analysis, capacity-building workshops, peer-to-peer learning, and multi-stakeholder dialogues. All these support companies to draft ambitious targets that advance gender balance, women's leadership and equal pay for work of equal value. In addition, the programme supports companies to develop accountable action plans on how to meet their targets and have a lasting impact on gender equality at the workplace.
The programme takes a holistic approach recognizing that many barriers need to be addressed to level the playing field for all genders at the workplace. It helps companies understand the various policies, practices, and interventions needed to advance gender equality and achieve gender parity. The programme’s overall goal is to deepen companies’ implementation of the Women’s Empowerment Principles and strengthen their contribution to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5.5, which calls for women’s full participation and equal leadership opportunities, including in economic life by 2030 as well as Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 8.5 which aims to achieve full and productive employment and decent work for all women and men, including for young people and persons with disabilities, and equal pay for work of equal value by 2030.

The Target Gender Equality programme is structured in six modules, aiming to set up participating companies for success to confidently draft targets and action plans for gender equality. After each module, participants receive summary material with key messages and good practice examples. Taking the WEPs Gender Gap Analysis Tool, participating in local sessions and completing on-demand videos is mandatory in order to gain the Target Gender Equality Certificate of Completion at the end of the programme. Other activities are optional but highly recommended in order to gain the most value from the Target Gender Equality experience.
